OSHP Investigating Licking Co. Fatal Crash

Posted: Updated:

One person is dead and a second person was injured in a crash north of Newark Wednesday.

According to Licking County dispatchers, emergency crews responded to the 1500 block of state Route 79 on a report of a two-vehicle crash at about 11:14 a.m.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said a black Honda Civic was traveling south on S.R. 79 when the driver lost control in a curve.

The driver overcorrected and went into a skid, the patrol said.

The vehicle traveled into the northbound lane while sliding sideways, where it was struck by a northbound GMC pick-up truck.

The driver of the Honda, 23-year-old Brandon Miles, of Newark, died at the scene.

The driver of the pick-up truck, Ernest White, 55, of Nashport, was transported to Licking Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released.

White's wife, Tammy, 50, was a passenger in the pick-up truck. She was flown to The Ohio State University Medical Center, where she was treated and released.

Investigators said the primary cause of the crash was identified as excessive speed. Alcohol is not suspected as a contributing factor.

The crash remains under investigation.
