Upper Arlington Residents Fed Up After 4th Power Outage In 2 Weeks

Posted: Updated:
UPPER ARLINGTON, Ohio -

It was another busy day of class at Barrington Elementary School in Upper Arlington, and another day where the lights went out.

"There is a little bit of frustration. We would be in parent meetings, and they have been wonderful in understanding we needed to take care of some things," Principal Jason Fine said.

But this was the fourth time in two weeks the school has lost power.

"We start the school year with that routine and consistent expectations and when you have four outages, that routine can be disrupted," Fine said.

AEP released the following statement Tuesday:

AEP Ohio has been doing an extensive reliability improvement project in the Upper Arlington and surrounding areas. The project is designed to improve the reliability of service to customers in this area.

This work includes major station underground cable replacement out of the company's Kenny Road Station. This is an aggressive project and one that is being done while the station is live and providing power. For the safety of our employees, the station fault protection equipment has been made more sensitive to anything touching station equipment or the lines serving customers from this station. In addition, customers must be switched to adjoining circuits while their line is out of service for this work. The underground station cables for eight of the station's 11 circuits will be replaced. This work is expected to be complete by the end of the year.

Some of the outages customers have experienced over the last two weeks are the result of this increased equipment sensitivity. This sensitivity has been removed. Moving forward, a mitigation plan has been developed to avoid these circumstances in the future. Today's outage was caused by a tree limb on the line.

While our intention continues to be to improve the reliability of this station, we recognize the inconvenience this has caused our customers. We appreciate our customers' patience and understanding as we complete this work to improve the reliability of their electric service.
