COLUMBUS, Ohio -

A motorcyclist was killed early Thursday morning after detectives say he crashed into a guard rail on the city's northeast side.

Columbus police responded to the intersection of North Hamilton and East Dublin Granville roads at about 3:35 a.m. Thursday after on a report of a crash.

According to police, a woman pinged her husband's cell phone after she hadn't heard from him for a couple of hours. The ping led the woman to the intersection of North Hamilton and East Dublin Granville roads where she found parts of his motorcycle in the roadway. The woman called for help and Columbus police used the department's helicopter to locate the motorcycle and the victim.

Detectives say it appears the man, identified as 25-year-old Cornelius Godfrey, crashed his motorcycle into a guardrail, causing it the flip over the guardrail and down a six-foot embankment.

Godfrey was driving home from the Hamilton Pub about a mile away from the scene of the crash, according to police.

Medic personnel pronounced Godfrey dead at the scene at 3:45 a.m.

Columbus police detectives say this is the second time since March that someone has been killed in a crash after leaving the pub.

Detectives say they will be contacting the Ohio Investigative Unit with the Ohio Department of Public Safety.

The Ohio Investigative Unit will investigate the pub following the crash.

"We have received a request from the Columbus Police Department to assist them by conducting a trace back investigation regarding that crash," said Eric Wolf, of the Ohio Investigative Unit. "It means we will be working … and trying to determine the source of the alcohol, if in fact alcohol was involved in the crash."

Officials said the March 13 crash will not be part of the investigation.

"There are just a number of factors that go into it, and in can be very difficult to prove knowledge that a person was intoxicated and in fact oversold," Wolf said.

The intersection of North Hamilton and East Dublin Granville roads was closed during the investigation. Officers reopened the intersection at about 6:45 a.m.
