COLUMBUS, Ohio -

A one-of-a-kind hotel is coming to the Short North Arts District.

Crews broke ground on the boutique 135-room Le Meridien hotel Thursday.

The hotel, along with a 313-space parking garage and 60,000 square feet of office and retail space could be finished by January 2015.

The Pizzuti Company said it took five years of planning and paperwork to get the project off the ground, but promises that the amenities will be worth the wait.

"It is a world class hotel. It certainly raises the bar on offerings here in Columbus. It will be a great complement to the new convention hotel and we think it will drive traffic and tourism, and all the things we need in the city," said Joel Pizzuti, president of The Pizzuti Companies.

The development called The Joseph will be along High Street in the Short North along Millay Alley, just north of the Interstate 670 cap.

The 10-story hotel will offer modern rooms with all the Paris-born brand's signature amenities. The hotel will feature a full-service restaurant, signature bar, deluxe spa suites and a 24-hour fitness center.

Pizzuti said the company had to overcome challenges in the historical arts district.

"You know, we are developers, and sometimes we buy ground, we take risks, and days like this we are rewarded for it," he said.

Pizzuti said the City of Columbus gets some of the credit for making the new development a reality. To show the company's appreciation, the ballroom of the hotel was named after Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman.

"Well, first I was totally and completely surprised, and I am grateful they did that, and I am glad it wasn't the bathroom or the boiler room," Coleman said.

A neighboring business said that losing parking during construction is the cost of progress.

"For me, a new parking garage, office building, and hotel is amazing, and I am excited about the project," said Susan Oilar, owner of Three Dog Bakery.
