U.S. 33 West Reopens In Athens County Following Fatal Crash

Posted: Updated:
ATHENS COUNTY, Ohio -

The westbound lanes of U.S. 33 have reopened in Athens County after a fatal crash.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, at about 7:32 a.m., troopers responded to the area of U.S. 33 westbound, just north of The Plains, on the report of a crash Tuesday.

A Scion TC driven by 17-year-old Kendall D. Sweany, of McArthur, was stopped in the southbound lanes of Old U.S. 33 at the intersection of U.S. 33. Sweany failed to yield, pulling out in front of a Ford Ranger that was traveling southbound on U.S. 33, according to troopers.

After the impact, the two vehicles traveled off the roadway and into the grass median.

Sweany was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in the Scion, 18-year-old Ashley N. Fausnaugh, of Hamden, was transported to O'Bleness Memorial Hospital with what troopers described as incapacitating injuries.

The driver of the Ford, 56-year-old John W. Miller, of Athens, was transported to O'Bleness Memorial Hospital to be treated for non-incapacitating injuries, according to troopers.

Alcohol is not a suspected factor in the crash, according to troopers.

The westbound lanes of U.S. 33 were closed while troopers investigate the crash, but have since reopened.
