Columbus City Schools Offer New Central Enrollment

Posted: Updated:

Rose Robinson has moved during the summer and now has to enroll her great nephew for kindergarten in Columbus City Schools, which she says can be a complicated process.

"Usually you go to the school to enroll the child. And then whatever papers that you are missing or shot records or whatever at that time you know the child could not attend school until shots were caught up," explained Robinson.

Robinson said she could end up going from building to building to get it all done. To make the enrollment easier Columbus City schools opened a new Central Enrollment Center... located on the campus of Fort Hayes.

"Eight enrollment specialists and four of those are bi-lingual. We have a social worker and counselor on staff to provide resources and the counselors will be doing some transcript evaluation," said Karen Hopper, Director of Student Services and Central Enrollment

The center is something the district has been working on for 10 years. By having all the enrollment services under one roof... the district is also trying to cut down on data information errors.

"So that we can ensure that the information that is entered into our student data systems is accurate the first time. We don't have to go back and make any corrections," explained Jeff Warner, Communications Director for Columbus Schools.

Robinson said the process was very quick and was using the on site nursing staff for health screenings. The Columbus Health Department will be there Tuesday to provide immunization shots. To make the process up even quicker the district recommends filling out the paperwork on line...before you come to the center.

Parents at the center seemed pleased with how easy the process was.

" I had to drive all the way from the west side to the east side just to enroll him as opposed to coming to here...I have only been here for five minutes and I am already done," said Tavon Brown.

The Enrollment Center is for students who are new to the district or for someone who has moved into a new neighborhood and would be changing schools. The center is open from 8:30 to 4:30.
