ATHENS COUNTY, Ohio -

Residents in a mobile home park in Athens County are on edge, knowing that a 4½-foot python is on the loose.

According to the Athens County sheriff, a resident turned the snake loose in the Sandstone Terrace Mobile Home Park, and it hasn't been seen since.

"I have seen just about everything here in Athens County. The hunt is on for a 4½-foot python," said Athens County Sheriff Pat Kelly.

Neighbor Sean Cook said it's a nightmare, and that he is worried for children and animals living in the area.

Cook said he has changed plans and routines because of the python.

"We are going to the lake. We can't stay in this pool. It's different," Cook said.

Sheriff Kelly said the owner had planned to run over the snake with a lawnmower because they couldn't afford to feed it anymore.

Now, Cook said he hopes a hungry snake doesn't come back, looking for a meal.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources said teams are trying to find and capture the snake.
