COLUMBUS, Ohio -

When neighbors in a north Columbus neighborhood got a knock on their doors last week, it sounded like a good deal.

"He talked about the work he was doing. I thought not many people specialize in this, I thought it was good," Frank Ricciardi said.

Some signed up for trimming by Huber's Tree Care, some for pesticide and fertilization work, and they handed over checks or cash before the work was done, in some cases before it was started.

"Credible demeanor, knowledgeable, in-depth information," Tara Schumacher said.

Then, Schumacher said the man started to send text messages asking for more money up front. She said she started to not feel so good about her investment, so she confronted the man as he worked on a neighbor's yard.

"[He] got in his car and sped away, peeled out of our neighborhood," Schumacher said.

After sending the man text messages to find out what was going on, and to get her money back, Schumacher got an answer.

"He sent a text saying he wasn't offering a refund, and in his mind he performed the services," Schumacher said.

NBC4 called the number on the flier the neighbors were given, but didn't get an answer or a returned call.

NBC4 also called the Ohio Department of Agriculture, where officials said there is an open investigation into complaints. The BBB also listed the company, Huber's Tree Care, with an F rating, and issued the following statement:

On June 4, 2013, BBB sent a letter to Huber requesting her voluntary cooperation in eliminating a pattern of complaints concerning:

• services paid for are not received,
• failure to honor contracts, (100% of complaints we've received specifically cite this as the issue)
• failure to maintain a license for pesticide application,
• failure to respond to requests for assistance, and
• failure to respond to requests for refunds.

BBB is requesting the business' voluntary cooperation in providing a written response outlining at least three steps they will implement to eliminate the underlying causes of the pattern of complaints reflected in our files.

BBB will update this portion of our Business Review when a response is received.
