HOLDEN BEACH, North Carolina -

The body of a Columbus man, who was reported missing after he was last seen in the area of Holden Beach in North Carolina, has been recovered.

Officials from the Holden Beach Police Department say the body of 21-year-old Kwesi Sample was found approximately one half mile from his last known location, at about 7 a.m. Sunday.

Sample was last seen swimming with a group of friends in a dangerous area called the Lockwood Folly Inlet where water temperatures were in the low 60s. The group reportedly swam out to the sandbar. When the group began swimming back to shore, Sample disappeared.

His friends tried to rescue him, but they were unable to find him. He was last seen at about 5:30 p.m. on May 14.

Sample's body has been released to the Brunswick County Medical Examiner's Office in North Carolina, pending the release to the family.

Sample was in North Carolina as part of a church retreat with hundreds of other students.

Sample was a former football player at Ohio Dominican University and a graduate of Eastmoor Academy.
