COLUMBUS, Ohio -

The winner in the small school category of the $10,000 NBC4 Make A Difference School Grant was announced Tuesday morning.

It's Champion Middle School for the program Champions Read!

"It was kind of rough getting started, but once they got in the content, they really grew and they were growing more educationally," said Principal Ed Baker.

Three hundred students combined to read more than 14,000 books, and the program offers redeemable points to be used as cash in the school book store.

The program was the idea of reading instructor Tahnda Hawkins, who was quick to spread credit around.

"It was a team effort," she said. "We really do have a wonderful staff."

NBC4's Colleen Marshall, Cabot Rea, Jym Ganahl, Ellie Merritt and Steve Wainfor were on hand for the check presentation at the school Tuesday afternoon.

"We are so proud of your hard work," said Columbus City Schools board member Hanifa Kambon.

The grant money will buy thousands of new books for the reading program.
