Police officers in two states are looking for a Columbus man believed to be
traveling with a 14-year-old Texas girl.
Stephan Andrew Cox, 26, is wanted in connection with the disappearance of
14-year-old Ruby Contreras from North Richland Hills, Texas.
According to North Richland Hills police, Contreras failed to return home from
North Oaks Middle School, in Haltom City, on April 24. Friends and family are
unaware of her whereabouts and are concerned for her safety. They say that this
behavior is not typical of her and they have no reason to believe that she ran
away from home.
Officers conducted searches and canvassed the area surrounding the school
but were unable to locate
Detectives in Texas believe that Cox and Contreras could be traveling west
by bus service.
Cox is described as a Hispanic male who is 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighs 130
Contreras is described as a Hispanic female who is 4 feet 11 inches tall and
weighs 95 pounds. She was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and blue
Detectives believe that Cox is a dangerous person and that Contreras is not
safe in his custody.
According to a report from NBC affiliate KXAS-TV in Dallas-Fort Worth,
Texas, the Stephan Cox that police in Texas are looking for is the same man who
was indicted by a Franklin County Grand Jury in February of two counts of
unlawful sexual conduct with a minor from a January 2013 incident.
In that case, Cox was accused of having unlawful sexual conduct with a
13-year-old Pennsylvania girl that he allegedly met online.
Court records show that Cox was released on house arrest on February 27
while awaiting trial. He was to be electronically monitored during house arrest
and was scheduled to appear in court on May 7.
