OSU Crew Club Suspended During Hazing Investigation

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ohio -

Editorial note: Chris Swartz is currently head coach of Upper Arlington Crew, Inc.

The Ohio State University's crew club is suspended as officials investigate a report of hazing.

According to Dave Isaacs, spokesman for the university's office of student life, the crew club was placed on interim suspension during the investigation.

The university would not release any details about the alleged hazing, or when the suspension was handed down.

OSU officials emphasized that the crew club is treated like any other student organization, and is not a team regulated through the athletic department.

Chris Swartz founded the OSU Crew Club 35 years ago. Swartz says it took him two years to establish the group which originally had nine members but now has grown to more than 100.

Swartz, who stays in contact with the group's leadership, told NBC4 he could not discuss the details of the hazing allegations but that he is was upset to hear about the suspension which he says will last in to 2014.

"To incorporate in to the programs I work with is for the most part trying to do the right thing. And this was not what happened with the team and it's very frustrating," Swartz said.

Former club member Phil Tassi graduated from OSU in 2010 and says he is also saddened to hear of the suspension. Tassi worries about what the long term impact of a suspension will be on the group.

"Not too many people come in having experience. So you have to build it from freshman, sophomore, junior, senior year. So if you take out almost two years you lose all that experience," Tassi said.

Meanwhile, Swartz says he is confident the program will have loyal supporters to help it rebuild.

"When this program comes back online and it will because I'll keep watching it and make sure it does. When it comes back online. I'll be there to help them out and try to guide them forward," Swartz said.
