OSU Campus Streets Reopen Following Suspicious Package Report

COLUMBUS, Ohio -

Ohio State University police officers and the Columbus bomb squad were called to College Street on The Ohio State University's main campus Tuesday evening to investigate an unattended package.

During the investigation, College Road was shut down between West 12th Avenue and Hagerty Drive.

Students who were dining in Sloopy's Restaurant in the Ohio Union tell NBC4 they were evacuated from the restaurant shortly before 6:20 p.m. Tuesday.

The Columbus Division of Fire tells NBC4 the bomb squad was called to OSU's main campus to investigate.

The package, which was later identified as a backpack, was detonated by the bomb squad shortly after 7 p.m.

According to OSU police, the backpack was not considered a threat. The police and fire response was precautionary and followed standard procedure.

Roadways around the Ohio Union were reopened shortly before 8 p.m.

In a public safety announcement, the university said:

"Ohio State University officials report the evacuation has been lifted by the Columbus Division of Fire, and the Ohio Union will resume normal operations.  According to officials, the unattended package contained no explosives.  The university responded with every precaution to an unattended item in accordance with standard operating procedures. The university thanks the Columbus Division of Fire, the Columbus Division of Police and the Ohio State University Division of Police for the swift actions to ensure the safety of our students, faculty, staff and visitors to the Ohio Union."
