COLUMBUS, Ohio -
Columbus police says a woman was taken to an area hospital in critical condition after being found on a COTA bus with a gunshot wound Tuesday afternoon.
According to police, a COTA bus was driving in the area of East 8th Avenue and North 4th Street at 3:44 p.m. when it was struck several times by gunfire.
The bus stopped in the area of East 19th Avenue and North 4th Street where a victim was found on the bus.
The female victim, 39-year-old Amy M. Develvis, was taken to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in critical condition where she was immediately taken into surgery. Officers say she had been shot in the head.
There were between 14 and 15 people on the bus at the time of the shooting, but no one else was injured.
Detectives say it is still too early to tell, but they believe that Develvis was not the target in the shooting.
Witnesses tell police they saw a red Chevy Impala leaving the area following the shooting. The Impala had a partially shot out rear window with a license plate located in the rear window.
Several witnesses were interviewed at the scene.
The Columbus police assault squad is investigating the incident.
Anyone with information regarding the shooting is asked to contact Columbus police at 614-645-4545.
North 4th Street was closed between East 18th and East 19th avenues, and East 19th Avenue was also closed at North 4th Street during the investigation.
