Police Helicopters Grounded Due To Gaps In Records

Columbus police helicopters are grounded after the department found gaps in maintenance reports.

According to the department, while trying to sell one of the helicopters in the fleet, officials found the gaps in records, so the department is now going through the records for each aircraft.

"Really, this is not a huge impact on the citizens and the safety. But when you're a police officer and you're on the ground, you're always glad to have that eye in the sky," said Columbus police Sgt. Rich Weiner.

Currently, the department owns seven helicopters. Officials said five are air worthy.

One that crash landed last summer is still being worked on, and the department is still trying to sell the seventh helicopter.
