OSU Oval To Become Bike & Skateboard-Free Zone

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ohio -

To develop a pedestrian-friendly campus core, a Walk Zone, encompassing both the North and South Ovals, is being established on The Ohio State University campus.

In the zone, campus visitors will soon be required to dismount bikes, skateboards, or similar devices and walk them across the Oval, said OSU Transportation Spokesperson Lindsay Komlanc.

"It would definitely affect me because it cuts the time in half because I live two east of the Oval," said Sophomore Daniel Barton.

OSU officials said they began studying changes to vehicular and pedestrian traffic   last fall after a number of campus-area accidents occurred.

"Transportation around campus is kind of a big thing and it would be inconvenient to have to go out of the way for a regulation or rule," said Sophomore Phil Streza. He said he bikes back and forth to school every day. "I have one class in one corner of campus and the next 15 minutes later in the exact opposite corner," he said.

Starting April 17, Komlanc said 40 volunteers will start educating students about dismounting their bike or skateboard and walking it across the Oval. She said students will be educated about the change through the rest of the Spring and part of the Fall semesters.

Komlanc said there is a cultural shift taking place on campus that will begin with the Oval.

"If they do the ban and accidents go down and people are safer, then it was the right thing to do," said OSU student Grant Warner.

Beginning in the Fall of 2013, the requirement to dismount in this zone will be enforced. Enforcement, citations will be written at the officer's discretion, including, but not limited to, location, time-of-day, previous violations, and danger presented by the violation.

Fines for state and municipal violations begin at $129.00. Failure to pay these fines may lead to increased fine amounts and issuance of warrant for arrest.

Fines for university violations begin at $20.00. Failure to pay university violations may lead to increased fine amounts and university Sanctions.
