Sheriff: Study Shows Shortfall Of 150 Employees

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ohio -

Franklin County Sheriff Zach Scott has been pleading to county commissioners for added personnel in a new budget for weeks. Monday, he said a management study backs him up.

The study, conducted over 10 months, focused on facilities and people, and the sheriff said the results back up what he has been saying for a while: his office needs to add more people.

Franklin County Board of Commissioners President John O'Grady isn't opening up the checkbook quite so fast.

"I think the budget needs to be contracted, and the sheriff thinks it needs to expand. That is where there is a difference of opinion," O'Grady said.

The sheriff tells NBC4 that his jail and patrol units are operating thin, and it is a public safety and overtime concern.

"The idea of more with less, at some point you do less with less. I think we passed that point a long time ago," Scott said.

The report released to commissioners Monday was compiled by Colorado-based Voorhis Associates, Inc.

While the recommendations focused on manpower, facilities, technology, and effectiveness, they didn't come with a suggested price tag.

"Right now, it is literally a wish list, people banging on the door saying, give us more money," O'Grady said.

The sheriff said he will push hard for the funding he says he needs. He added that he is willing to work with the commissioners and others to get it done.

"We're going to work together or it is not going to be beneficial for the taxpayers of Franklin County or citizens who need safety and security," Scott said.

The parties agreed to look at possibly putting some prices along with the recommendations at the end of Monday's meeting.

The average family does 400 loads of laundry per year. Those costs add up. You're paying for water, detergent and energy, not counting the washer and dryer.
