Licking County Gun Shop Reports Break-In, 15 Guns Stolen

HEBRON, Ohio -

Hebron police and the Licking County Sheriff's Office are searching for the suspect or suspects who broke into a local gun shop, and stole 15 firearms Wednesday night.

Officers responded to the Buckeye Outdoors store, located on Arrow Head Blvd., in Hebron, at about 10:36 p.m. Wednesday.

Hebron police detectives tell NBC4 they believe the suspect or suspects broke through a glass window near the boat and Marina area, which triggered an alarm and alerted Hebron police.

Hebron police called in the Licking County Sheriff's Office, Pataskala, Newark and Buckeye Lake Police for assistance. They brought in additional officers and K-9 units to search the store and the perimeter.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are working with Hebron officers to conduct an inventory of the store, and said 15 firearms were taken.

Dave Coulson with the ATF says the inventory results and serials numbers will be entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC).  The information will be kept in the database in the event one of the stolen guns is recovered during any future investigations.

Buckeye Outdoors is one of the largest gun retailers in the nation. The store is owned by Vance's.

The retailer is under 24-hour surveillance, and police said they will review the video, hoping it will prove to be a vital part of the investigation.

The burglary brought back memories for area restaurant owner Ed Brosie.

Brosie owns Buckeye Eatery and Tap Room in downtown Hebron and said he's concerned because there have been several homes burglarized in the area, including his. He said several of his handguns were stolen and never recovered.

"I'm real concerned about it being out on the street, because I'm pretty sure they are not going to be used for legal use," Brosie said.

No suspects are in custody at this time, and the investigation continues.

Hebron police reports show that Buckeye Outdoors was also burglarized in October 2004. During the break-in, 20 Remington shotguns were stolen. In that case, several people were arrested, including some former employees.
