COLUMBUS, Ohio -
Four people were injured in a two-alarm fire at an east side apartment complex Monday morning.
Fire crews were called to the Brookside Manor apartments located in the 4500 block of Refugee Road, just east of Hamilton Road, at about 9:58 a.m. Monday.
Arriving firefighters found fire and smoke conditions with a significant fire on the second and their floors of the building.
With the number of victims needing to be rescued and accounted for, fire officials upgraded the fire to a second alarm.
Several people had to be rescued from the roof of the building. Firefighters observed several residents hanging from windows and one person was hanging from a third-story gutter, according to crews on scene.
Four people were injured and of those four, three were transported to Grant medical Center to be treated for leg-related injuries. The fourth person was treated at the scene. Fire officials say they likely sustained injuries from jumping from the rooftops.
Columbus firefighters and Whitehall firefighters were on scene working to put out the fire. The American Red Cross was also called to the scene to assist.
A total of 10 units were destroyed or seriously damaged by the flames and smoke. The damages to the complex were estimated to be about $200,000.
There were smoke detectors in the apartments, but it is unclear at this time if they sounded to alert the residents.
