Horse Rescued After Being Found 400 Pounds Underweight

Posted: Updated:
CAMBRIDGE, Ohio -

A horse that was once on top of the world was found near death, but there is a new mission for Ollie, and he needs to be nursed back to health once again.

The love between champion horse Ollie and Lisa Gordon is obvious. Last August, Gordon saved the beautiful black stallion who was found 400 pounds underweight, missing two teeth and covered in scabs.

"He had no hair on his tail. He had big open sores on his hind end from being full of worms. He was just in really bad shape," Gordon said.

Ollie's original name is Fox Valley Oliver, a champion Shire in the U.S. and Canada. He was so popular that the Breyer company made a toy model after him.

Because of his prestigious reputation, Ollie was often used for breeding. After time, he became severely neglected, and the American Shire Association found him and gave him to Gordon and Frog Pond Farm.

"I helped him. He gave back to me just as much as I'm giving to him," she said.

These days, Ollie needs some extra care. He's at The Ohio State University veterinary clinic with colitis.

"It can be severe because they lose a lot of fluid. They can lose protein and be painful as well. He also has an abscess on his right front foot that's being treated as well," said Dr. Margaret Mudge, of the OSU vet clinic.

Doctors are hoping full recovery and Gordon wants to make Ollie the poster boy for all rescue horses, and bring attention to the growing problem.

"We want to be able to help horse owners keep their horses if they're hurt or they're ill and they need that little bit of extra help," Gordon said.

Her program will help pay veterinary bills or find good homes for horses -- all in honor of Ollie.

"It's going to be great to be able to say because of Ollie, this horse lived or because of Ollie, this horse has another chance," she said.
