Dual-Polarization Radar Aids Forecasters

Posted: Updated:

A recent National Weather Service Doppler upgrade will aid storm forecasters in determining the nature and intensity of precipitation by adding a vertical component to the microwave pulses sent from the radar site toward the clouds.

Dual-polarization radar provides a three-dimensional aspect to storm detection, which can improve lead times in weather warnings issued by the weather service.

The new radar technology accurately captured the debris pattern occurring with a strong tornado that struck Hattiesburg, Mississippi, this winter, providing forecasters with important tracking information.

Tornado season in Ohio commenced early last year with seven Ohio tornadoes touching down on March 2, 2012, resulting in three deaths and damaging all 101 homes and structures in Moscow, Ohio, southeast of Cincinnati.

Peak tornado season in Ohio runs from mid-April through mid-June.
