Former Union County Dance Barn Destroyed In Fire

Posted: Updated:
PLAIN CITY, Ohio -

U.S. Route 42 has reopened in Union County after an early morning fire at a vacant barn Thursday morning.

Fire crews responded to the barn at about 4:30 a.m.

The Ohio Department of Transportation says U.S. 42 was closed between Industrial Parkway and S.R. 736. The roadway reopened at about 8:50 a.m.

The Jerome Township Fire chief tells NBC4 the barn was formerly known as The Plain City Barn Dance, which was a square dancing barn. The building has been vacant for several years.

There were at least 11 fire departments on hand to battle the flames. Firefighters experienced some issues because of the frigid temperatures and the lack of water available at the scene.

Firefighters will be monitoring hotspots.

Several fire departments were called for mutual aid.

For years, the bar was a source of entertainment; a landmark for the town. The owners say they had tried to turn it into a restaurant a few years ago.

It is unclear what caused the fire.
