A Columbus man has been arrested after a 7-year-old girl told police she was sexually assaulted by a relative twice in the last month.
Detectives say the girl disclosed on January 31 that she had been sexually assaulted by the same man, two times in the month of January.
Columbus police SWAT officers arrested 31-year-old Christopher R. Johnson at his residence located in the 1600 block of Genessee Avenue without incident.
According to Columbus police, this is not the first time the girl has raised questions about the suspect when it comes to alleged abuse.
Officials said they found probable cause in the latest allegation.
Johnson has been charged with the rape of a victim under the age of 13.
Police said they are waiting on evidence from a rape kit to move forward, and that the investigation is still ongoing.
Karen Days, president of the Center For Family Safety and Healing, said workers at the center hear stories of sexual abuse every week.
"It's not an overnight fix, but we tell victims they will be on the road to healing. We offer help, but it may get worse before it gets better," she said.
The organization offers one-stop support for victims of crimes like sexual abuse, gathering support from police, prosecutors and more under one roof.
"One of the things kids would say if they had to tell their story more than once, they didn't feel like they were being believed," Days said.
No further information has been released regarding the investigation.
