NEW MATAMORAS, Ohio -
At least 10 people were arrested Tuesday as several Athens
County area environmental activist groups protested at a fracking wastewater
disposal site.
The protest included nearly 100 activists from Earth First
and Appalachia Resist at the GreenHunter Water site on state Route 7 in New
Matamoras in Washington County.
According to NBC4's Rick Reitzel, waste is brought to
the facility by truck, but with approval, the company plans on transporting the
waste by barge on the Ohio River.
The protesters marched in protest and closed the terminal
Tuesday.
For four hours, protesters were able to stop truckloads of
brine from entering the plant by erecting a 30-foot tower, which one of them
climbed.
Washington County deputies and Ohio State Highway Patrol
troopers responded and arrested at least 10 people who employees claimed
entered the property.
One of the arrests includes a woman who said she is a
journalist. Authorities confiscated her camera.
The protester who climbed the tower eventually came down and
was arrested.
