HANOVER, Ohio -

A garbage truck drove off a bridge in Licking County, causing a hazmat situation at the Rocky Fork River Friday afternoon.

According to the Licking County 911 Center, the crash occurred on Dana Road just west of the intersection with Hickman Road at about 1:45 p.m.

The location is north of state Route 16 and the village of Hanover.

Crews told NBC4 that a garbage truck from Big "O" Refuse hit a guard rail and crashed over the side of the bridge, landing in about 2 feet of water.

The driver was not injured and climbed up onto the bridge.

A volunteer firefighter with the Hanover Volunteer Fire Department saw the wreckage and found the driver.

Cranes were called from Columbus help remove the truck.

Officials said the bridge will remain closed for the weekend.

The Environmental Protection Agency was called to the scene and took measures to keep a small amount of spilled fuel from going downstream.
