COLUMBUS, Ohio -

Columbus police officers are looking for a man who is suspected of assaulting a woman and attempting to take her purse on Valentine's Day.

Officers were called to the Speedway Gas Station located at 821 E. Dublin-Granville Rd. on a report of an assault, at about 11:26 p.m. Thursday.

Police say as 27-year-old Sarah Shepherd was getting into her vehicle parked next to a gas pump when an unknown man pulled her from the car and allegedly assaulted her. Shepherd says the man tried to take her purse.

Two Brothers Automotive is less than a mile from the Speedway and owner Jack Jones said the community is changing.

"I would not necessarily say we are crime-ridden, but by estimation we do have a problem," he said. Jones said his employees have their own solution to that problem.

"We open carry in this shop, most of our customers who come in notice it right," he said.

Jones said he has witnessed prostitution, drug deals and police busts nearby, but zero crimes on his property.

Columbus police community liaisons along with the local business association said they work continually with neighbors and businesses to battle area crime.

"The Northland Area Business Watch and the Northland Area Business Association are doing everything we can to help the community we live in to improve the conditions" said David Cooper Vice President of the association. "I do not think our area is any worst than any other part of Columbus."

Police said the suspect in the Speedway assault is described as a white male, who is between the ages of 30 and 35. He is 5  feet 7 inches tall with a medium build. He has short, dark, receding hair and a scruffy face.

According to a report, the suspect exited a white full size passenger van with white paint covering the passenger windows just before the assault.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Columbus Division of Police robbery squad at 614-645-4665 or Crime Stoppers at 614-461-8477.
