Police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found in an apartment fire in Mount Vernon as a homicide.
Firefighters were dispatched to an apartment building in the 200 block of Shirley Avenue shortly before 7:15 p.m. Thursday on a report of a fire.
Arriving crews found heavy fire conditions in the apartment building. Firefighters found one victim inside of the building during the extinguishing process.
The victim, 52-year-old Brad Grosscup, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mount Vernon police told NBC4 that they are investigating the death of Grosscup as a homicide.
Firefighters said that a neighbor called to report the fire. When crews arrived, they could see flames shooting out the back of the building.
The Knox County coroner said that the preliminary autopsy findings
clearly show that Grosscup had died prior to the fire.
No soot was found in the victim's airway and there were decompositional changes, which suggest death one to two days before the fire, the coroner said.
The cause of death is still
under investigation.
The fire was contained to one apartment building. The American Red Cross was called to help the displaced families.
Investigators from the Ohio State Fire Marshal's Office are investigating.
No other details were released, but NBC4 will update as we learn new information.
