A man died after trying to rescue a child who fell through the ice on a pond near an apartment complex in southeast Columbus Thursday afternoon.
Crews were called to the pond near an apartment complex off of Shore Blvd. at about 5:40 p.m.
According to Columbus police, officers and medics responded to a report of a child that broke through the ice and was in the water of a pond near the 4400 block of Lakeside South in Southeast Columbus.
Before help arrived, a neighbor, James R. Jenkins, 30, jumped into the water in an attempt to save the child.
Jenkins was able to reach the child, according to police. Other bystanders, police officers, and Columbus Division of Fire personnel made several attempts to rescue the pair.
Jenkins and the child went under the water before they were able to reach the shore.
Rescue divers were able to pull both Jenkins and the 5-year-old boy from the water.
Jenkins was transported to Grant Medical Center, where he later died.
The 5-year-old boy was transported by medical helicopter to Nationwide Childrens Hospital in life-threatening condition.
According to fire officials, the boy was in the water for more than an hour.
