National Signing Day: Meyer Assembles 2013 Class

Posted: Updated:

OSU head coach Urban Meyer's National Championship aspirations require national championship-caliber recruiting classes. As National Signing Day unfolded Wednesday, Meyer assembled a class which may rank among the top three in the nation.

Most of OSU's 24 commitments had verbally committed well before Wednesday, which is the first day high school seniors can officially sign letters of intent to play at a given school. OSU was eager to learn about Tennessee five-star safety Von Bell, who was considering OSU, Tennessee and Alabama. At his high school in northern Georgia, Bell told a national TV audience he would sign with Ohio State. Bell said he and OSU were "on a mission" to win a National Championship and unseat defending champion Alabama.

Bell is considered the highest rated recruit in this 2013 class. He's a 5 feet 11 inches tall, 190 pound safety who can hit with power and cover with elite speed. He played in the Under Armour All-American Game last month.

"When Von Bell called me 2 minutes before his announcement and said you know I'm in, right; and I said no, I didn't know you were in, congratulations!" Meyer said.

Highlights of the class include: two linebackers, Mike Mitchell and Trey Johnson, who both rate as major national recruits. Eleven Ohio natives are in the class, including New Albany's Darren Lee and Middle town's Alien Marshall. Marshall is considered the top player in Ohio this year.

"We don't red shirt here at Ohio State, we're going to recruit guys and push guys to be ready. We want to recruit guys who are ready to go jump in the fire and want to go play." Meyer said. He also said speed was a major factor in who OSU recruited this year.

Missouri RB Ezekiel Elliott, who had verbally committed to OSU last year, was the final Buckeye to make his official announcement. He spoke on live television in St. Louis just after 5 p.m.
