City of Columbus Division of Fire is Taking Applications

It’s official. The Columbus Civil Service Commission is taking applications for those interested in becoming a City of Columbus Firefighter April 1-30, 2014. Individuals who have the highest standard of mental endurance, physical strength, integrity and a commitment to the residents of greater the Columbus metropolitan area can apply online at http://csc.columbus.gov/

“A career in fire service is a rewarding and challenging experience,” said Columbus Division of Fire Chief Gregory Paxton. “It takes the courage to put others before self and those are the type of people that we want in our program.”

The Division held various recruitment and enrichments events throughout the city to expose hopefuls to the demands of the job and the rigors of testing.

“It takes commitment to train and learn the science of firefighting. It is more than muscle. It takes strategy, compassion for those being served and learning how to work as a team,” he concluded.

The application period runs from April 1-30, 2014. Interested candidates who meet the minimum requirements should apply for the exam through the City of Columbus Civil Service Commission at http://csc.columbus.gov/, or call (614) 645-0879, or email PoliceFireTesting@columbus.gov.

The minimum requirements are as follows:
  • Possession of a high school diploma or GED at time of hire;
  • At least seventeen (17) years, six (6) months of age;
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license; and
  • Be a citizen of the United States.
The test focuses on a number of topics that gauge an applicant’s ability to learn and perform the duties of a firefighter, including problem solving, spatial recognition and applying rules to general concepts.

The three-phase examination consists of a multiple-choice exam, a physical capabilities test and an oral assessment. The physical ability exam is a series of challenges designed to test ability in categories of fitness that are crucial in firefighting. Those who pass all three phases of the exam are placed on the eligibility list based on their final score.
