Foodperks! Disappearing; Giant Eagle Customers Displeased

Posted: Updated:

Giant Eagle is phasing out its foodperks! discount promotion. The food and fuel retailer made the announcement yesterday saying their customers want simpler and more frequent ways to save money.

Letters to Giant Eagle customers detailing the end of the program hit mail boxes late last week. News quickly spread on social media, disappointing loyal shoppers.

"A little irritated. I'm planning on going back to Krogers. I'm a little happier with the way they do things than I am with Giant Eagle," said Giant Eagle shopper Cherie Thompson.

Since the foodperks! discount began, Giant Eagle Advantage Card holders received a 1 percent discount off their grocery bill for every ten gallons of GetGo gas pumped. Customers could earn up to 20 percent.

But Giant Eagle executives said feedback from customers showed that not everyone like the structure of the program.

In a statement about the changes, Senior Director of Corporate Communications Rob Borella said, "…approximately 92 percent of Giant Eagle Advantage Card customers saved less than $40 each from foodperks! in the preceding 12 months."

Giant Eagle shopper Donna Willis said the discount is straight forward and easy to understand.

"I understood that if I swiped my card at the pump, for every gallon I pump, I get 1 percent off at the grocery. And each time I go to the checkout stand, the cashier will ask me, do you want to redeem your, 2, 3, 5 percent discount," Willis said. "It makes me a little angry and disappointed. I don't think we're ignorant people, that we can't understand if you use [your card] at the pump, then you get a percentage off at the checkout, and being that [the clerk] always asks me, I don't understand how someone could misunderstand."

If there is a silver lining to the loss of the foodperks! discount, it's that Giant Eagle customers can expect to find another fuel savings program next time they hit the pumps. In addition to using their fuelperks! discount, they can now use the GetGo 3 cent program. Advantage card holders can expect to save 3 cents per gallon of gas purchased.

But it may not be enough to keep customers from checking out for good.

"I'm going to be looking around. I don't know if it's going to be Meijer. I don't know yet," said Willis.
