Driver In Fatal Crash May Face Vehicular Homicide Charge

The driver in a fatal car crash in Delaware county that left a young mother dead, will likely face a charge of aggravated vehicular homicide, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Troopers from the Delaware post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol say Marc Kraft’s blood-alcohol level was three times the legal limit at the time of the crash Thursday night.

According to Troopers, the 45-year-old man struck a Subaru in the southbound lanes of U.S. Route 23, near state Route 315.

According to Sgt. Gurjit Grewal, the pickup truck Kraft was driving belonged to his employer, a Delaware County plumbing contractor.

Sgt. Grewal said that investigators interviewed the truck's owner who told them he was unaware Kraft had a revoked license and a history of DUIs. Troopers continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

NBC4 was unable to reach the owner of the truck for comment.

Heidi Hecker, 36, was a passenger in the Subaru. She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to troopers.

Hecker was riding in the back seat of the car with her 10-month-old daughter who was taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Officers said Hecker’s boyfriend was in the front of the car the family was riding in.

Kraft has had five prior DUI convictions in Pennsylvania dating back to 1989, and he has been without an operator’s license since 1992.

According to Sgt. Grewal, Kraft had little reaction when informed what had happened in the crash.

"We didn't see a lot of remorse and or any kind of reaction that you would think...as far as he doesn't really realize what he has done," Grewal said.

Kraft is currently being held in the Delaware County Jail. His next court appearance is scheduled for November 21.

Grewal said his office plans to forward a charge of aggravated vehicular homicide against Kraft to the local prosecutor who could take it to a grand jury as soon as next week.
