Third Rabid Bat Found In Delaware County

By Denise Yost

A third rabid bat was found in Genoa Township in Delaware County.  Two other rabid bats were discovered about two months ago in the Village of Galena and northern Radnor Township in Delaware County.

The third rabid bat was found in southern Genoa Township near Westerville.

The Ohio Department of Health reported a total of 43 rabid bats last year.

Bats are tested for rabies if they are suspected of coming into contact with domestic animals or people. People need to be very careful when they handle bats.

Rabies is a viral disease that attacks the nervous system.

If you find a bat in your house, the steps to remove it are:

  • Turn the lights on to make it bright in the house.
  • Close off the room completely.
  • Put on heavy gloves.
  • Keep your eyes on the bat at all time.
  • Take an open-ended container and place it over the bat.
  • Slide a piece of cardboard over the open end and tape it securely.
  • Call your local health department to see if they want you to bring it in for testing.
