WOW: Photographer snaps osprey carrying shark with fish in its mouth

PINELLAS COUNTY, FL (WFLA) – A local photographer with a passion for wildlife took an amazing photo of an osprey carrying a small shark... that had a fish in its mouth! The photo has gone viral.

Doc Jon snapped the photo near Hubbard’s Marina which is a popular place to bird watch.

It shows an osprey clutching a small shark in its talons and the shark had a fish in its mouth.

He did not realize that he had a once-in-a-lifetime photo until he got home and took a closer look.

“When I got home and opened it, my first thought was WOAH!? That’s a shark in his talons! But then I saw the fish and I literally laughed and said, 'NO WAY?!' " I couldn't believe it,” Jon told WFLA.com.

Jon has been taking photos for about five years now.

“It was recommended to me for relaxation and learning to be in the moment. I fell in love with it and haven’t been able to put the camera down since. I see things people miss while they are staring at their cell phones. We live in paradise and I see it better than most because I’m paying attention to it,” he said.

No doubt, there are plenty of places to take photos in the picturesque Tampa Bay area, but Jon has some favorite locations.

“My favorite place to take photos is near the water in the mangroves or near the ocean but I am going to start traveling and photographing all of the world’s wonders.”

Jon has some tips for those who want to learn how to take great photos.

“For the new photographer, I recommend learning from YouTube. There are plenty of us out there willing to share what we know and I’m always trying to learn. I don’t recommend spending a lot of money on equipment at first. I tell people start small and see if you love it. Once you love it, move up in your price range as you grow. The camera doesn't make the photograph, the photographer does. The camera just improves the shot quality,” Jon said.
