COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Two men who are accused of shooting two Columbus Police officers were in court Friday.
The shooting occurred at a suspected drug house on East Rich Street at about 9:45 p.m. Wednesday while narcotics tactical-unit officers were attempting to serve a warrant. Officers were met with gunfire after they alerted those inside that they had a search warrant.
The injured officers were 48-year-old John Gillis and 44-year-old Anthony Garrison. Garrison was shot in the arm and leg, and Gillis was shot in the leg. Both were taken to Grant Medical Center in stable condition. NBC 4 reported that Gillis remained in ICU and Garrison was slated to be moved to a regular room Friday, per police sources.
There were eight people in the house, and five suspects were arrested. Police said weapons and drugs -- possibly crack cocaine -- were removed from the house and that the investigation is continuing.
Derrick L. Foster, 38, who also is a current supervisor with code enforcement with the City of Columbus Department of Development, was arrested and charged with two counts of felonious assault and two counts of attempted murder Thursday. Foster played under Coach John Cooper from 1988 to 1992.
Teenager Michael T. Gravely, 19, was charged and arrested for the same.
Both Foster and Gravely were arraigned Friday and neither received bond. The judge said both men posed a threat to society.
Gravely was found hiding in an upstairs area of the house after the shooting and has prior criminal charges.
Foster's lawyer was seeking a reasonable bond for his client because he says Foster cooperated with police and had no criminal history.
