COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The next time you clean your house, you could do your part to save the environment.
Trudy Stewart used to keep air fresheners all over her house and used common cleaning chemicals, NBC 4's Marshall McPeek reported.
"I was taking two different medications, plus an inhaler because I couldn’t breathe," Stewart said.
Now, Stewart uses products that are so natural, you could eat most of them.
"When we're cleaning and you turn on those spigots and you run everything down the drain, where does it go? It goes into our water supply," Stewart said.
Stewart recommends using baking soda in a Parmesan cheese shaker to clean surfaces -- it even kills mold.
If you need something abrasive in the cleaner, Stewart recommends adding sea salt to the shaker.
"When you’re doing this kind of work, elbow grease is part of it," she said. "You can't just put the bubbles on and let them do the work. You actually have to scrub."
A 50/50 solution of water and vinegar and a piece of recyclable newspaper are all that’s needed to clean windows.
To make your own furniture polish, just use lemon juice and canola oil.
"So the lemon is going to help cut the dirt and the buildup and the oil comes behind it and leaves a nice shine," Stewart said.
