COLUMBUS, Ohio—The holidays are over and many Central Ohioans are trying to decide how to dispose of their Christmas trees.

According to the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio, if you’re getting ready to dispose of your tree, you’ll want to contact your individual waste hauler or city hall to find out what the rules are for your community, NBC 4‘s Mikaela Hunt reported.

Christmas trees are considered yard waste and are not allowed in local landfills, according to John Remy, of SWACO.

SWACO does offer another option beyond local haulers. The groups has two contracted composting locations that will accept Christmas trees and turn them into compost free of charge.

The locations are at 2850 Rohr Road and 4120 Roberts Road.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources does not have a formal tree disposal program that coordinates tree disposal with natural habitat creation in local ponds and lakes.

Other states and municipalities have these options, but if you get permission from the land owner where a body of water is located, you can dispose your tree at that location.
