COLUMBUS, Ohio - How does the new Ohio State University president compare to the former?

Dr. Michael Drake, announced Thursday as the new president, has some similarities to former president E. Gordon Gee.

They share a particular fashion quirk: the love of the bow tie. But it goes deeper than that.

Gee and Drake are actively interested in remaining in the classroom.

Gee is now President Emeritus on temporary assignment as Interim President at West Virginia University, where he will remain active as a teacher and lecturer at Ohio State's Moritz College of Law.

Drake, an ophthalmologist, was not only chancellor at University of California Irvine, but served as a professor of ophthalmology in the school of medicine.

Gee is credited with raising more than $1.6 million of support for Ohio State during his second term as president from 2007 until his resignation in July 2013.

He is also credited with raising academic standards for incoming freshmen, and elevating Ohio State's national profile as a research university, and a $500 million expansion of The Ohio State University's Wexner Medical Center.

In 2006, Drake created the first new public law school in California in more than 40 years. Under his leadership, UC Irvine added more than 5 million square feet of new space, including a 500,000 square foot hospital.

During his tenure, applications for admission to UC Irvine increased by 90 percent, and the school was recognized in 2012 and 2013 as the leading university in the U.S. younger than 50 years of age.

Gee loves people, culture, and was approachable, and Drake seems to have the same qualities, recently teaching a class on music of the '60s and Civil Rights movement.
